Whenever I get new subscribers or potential new subscribers the first thing they want is Saturdays, then if asked for a second day it is always Wednesdays. Why? Well in the past these were always the main racedays and form for the other day was always scant. Not so now. Still the Wednesday bias is ingrown into most punters” psyche. A very good mate and client Charlie Philcox (long since deceased unfortunately) came up with a reason why Wednesdays were frequently the worst day of the week. He would say the problem is that the horses that came to town on Wednesdays were from all over the place so the reality was you weren’t looking at Metro trained horses running 90% at Metro venues like you do on a Saturday where form is so revealed and limited to a handful of tracks which we all knew and understood. No. Wednesdays sees a mix of the Metro trained horse with numerous contestants from provincial and country venues interspersed and these coming from a huge diversity of tracks which fo the most part are completely foreign to local punters. He was right. It may be a bit less so these days with so much form on the internet freely available but how many people can compare Dubbo to Canterbury or Sale to Caulfield or Sandown? How many people know that a horse that wins at Flemington is far more likely to win at its next start in the city than a winner at Moonee Valley or Caulfield. But you can find this out because many hundreds of horses fit this scenario. Now compare winners from Cranbourne, Mornington or Swan Hill??? Nah! Generally you cant do it. Today we have Doomben Good 4 , Canterbury soft 6, the Valley soft 6 and Gawler soft 5 Belmont probably a Good 4 standard winter conditions I suppose. It’s a challenge. We have a Metro Hotshot today and a Provincial one. The first is Waller trained and up against all Sydney stabled horses. The other is Metroexperienced against a field of mostly country and provincial trained horses. Both it and every other runner except one , has a strike rate of less than 10%. Sounds like a great race hah? The redeeming feature is it is obviously down in class but hasnt run a place even since March.
