This was the headline in Australian Newspapers in the 90’s. I’m not so great in Sydney now. Ive found that the big money is in country races and maidens etc. which is why many of our Professional clients haunt the midweeks, rarely getting involved on Wednesdays, the hardest day of the week and Staurday when 18 race meetings can be the norm.
Races are always overlapping. My old mate Charlie Philcox, regularly created new ideas and in a race contest at Hawkesbury, we both picked up $500 prizes for being in the top echelon over the day. On that occasion he backed the top 5 winformratings and simply rolled over the results as the day went on knowing that we would collect around 60% to 70% of the races.
Many of the contestants (you had to put up a $5000 Bank to enter) blew their entire bank betting on the first race on a $1.20 favourite for the place. It helped reach the turnover target quickly they though BUT after leading on the home turn it faded to finish 4th.
Not a pleasant day for them although the Club put on a nice spread for lunch for all competitors. Ken Callendar won the competition more then doubling his bank on the day. I think he won a trip to Hong Kong for the big races there.
So down to 29 potential runners for the Melbourne Cup and no reason for the Committee to invite any of the bottom 5 to replace something else in the top 24.
Will I do a Phantom call on Saturday night??? I’m thinking of it but let’s see how it works out at final field time.
