By any measure the Oaks was the weakest race of the day. The filly that won would have rated second except that as a maiden I gave her a 20 point penalty. At here previous start over 2400 meters she failed to win a class 1 as favourite. It was a bold ride by Avadulla that set it upand for some reason, none of the other jockeys could be bothered chasinguntil it was far too late and sh was able to win, not hold on, but win with the slowest last 600 metres of any race on the day and slow by not a couple of lenghths, not by 5 lengths but by nearly ten lengths. Clearly Yankee Rose was not herself but you can’t make up 40 or 50 lengths even if at your fittest, especialy when you set yourself the task of going around them. Had the better fillies been ridden better, they should have been able to get within striking distance long before the turn and have evry chance. In Sydney, jockeys have been fined for riding as they did in that race yesterday. No sour grapes, I did have my biggest bet of the year on Yankee Rose and even had she been closer would still not have won. In any case, my second best bet of the day Spright, got me out at $4.60 best fluc so while not a winning day, still along way in front of the Cup Carnival so far.
